CNG and Propane Capable F-150 is Here!

The only light-duty pickup capable of running on CNG or propane has just rolled off the line in Kansas City.

Interested parties can now option their 2016 F-150 with a factory-installed gaseous-fuel prep pack. Available on 5.0L V8 equipped trucks, Ford includes hardened valves, valve seats, pistons and rings allowing it to cope with dual fuel systems.

“It’s exciting to see the first F-150s with the CNG/propane-prepped 5.0-liter V8 headed to customers,” said Jon Coleman, Ford fleet sustainability and technology manager. “Whether running on gasoline, gaseous fuel or both, the 5.0-liter V8 F-150 offers hardworking customers terrific towing and payload and now, the ability to operate on alternative fuel.”

Ford says the truck should return 750 miles combined on both gasoline and CNG.

CNG/LPG prep from the factory will run you $315, the real cost comes from upfitting a separate fuel tank, fuel lines and special injectors. Total cost is typically between $6,000 and $10,000.

Anyone know if Ford plans to extend CNG capability to Ecoboost models?

Isn't EcoBoost designed for direct gasoline injection? Would they not need to create a new one for CNG trucks?

It would ostensibly be the same process... Manufacture the compliant heads and then its on the customer to find compliant parts. Regardless you'll need a fuel delivery system, Ford doesn't sell that.

Look Delphi makes CNG direct injectors

Wonder what the fuel port looks like. Would it operate like a propane tank valve?

the injectors look just like regular fuel rails. The trucks will have a second tank for CNG.

Where the fuel goes looks like this... although I dont think the CNG F-150 will have the CNG tank in place of a regular gas tank, so the fuel port is unlikely to be behind the fuel door.

I thought the CMG F-150 can run on both gasoline and CNG. So wouldn't there be a need for two tanks and two ports?

who said there wouldn't be? Go back and read what I said, there will be a seperate tank for CNG.

I assume he wasn't looking for what a regular fuel door looks like as those are dime a dozen...

No such thing as a Gas/Electric/CNG hybrid.

You could do a CNG/electirc hybrid, CNG just goes where gasoline used to...
