Ford F-150 Is The Only Half-Ton To Ace Small Overlap Crash Test

The small overlap test was designed to replicate a situation where the front corner of your truck hits another vehicle or a stationary object like a tree or light pole. Only the Ford F-150 SuperCab managed to ace this test and receive a Top Safety Pick rating.

For comparison, in the event of an overlap crash in the real world the Ram 1500 Quad Cab drivers could have the door-hinge pillar, instrument panel and steering column push into their legs and experience extensive cabin intrusion. With a maximum intrusion of 16-17 inches, the driver will need assistance to get out of the crushed cab whereas the Ford F-150 experienced marginal footwell intrusion and as you can see from the picture above, the driver could actually walk away from the incident on their own two feet.

Other pickup trucks tested were the Chevy Silverado, GMC Sierra double cab, and the Toyota Tundra double cab. All three received an “acceptable” rating in the small overlap test by maintaining the cabin survival space reasonably well even though they scored a “poor” rating in the lower leg & foot injury department.

The worst out of the current line of half-ton pickup trucks were the Silverado and Sierra Crew Cab and Ram 1500 quad cab and crew cab. All four scored an overall “marginal” rating in the small overlap test and the Ram trucks seems to be the worst of the bunch with the only “poor” structure rating out of all the tested trucks.

So everyone can drive easy knowing that you’re well protected inside a 2016 Ford F-150 SuperCab and a 2015 Ford F-150 SuperCrew which also managed to receive a Top Safety Pick rating.

Not entirely surprised, they have been leaders in the truck segment for a long time and maintaining that status once you have achieved it is always priority to keep it. They're just lucky to have seen this overlap test get implemented during a time when the last F-Series generation had a few years to go, likely when the new F-Series was undergoing development.

If any other truck maker had timing in their favor like that, out come would be similar.

I expected better from Ram since they're know for building trucks but that's a lot of cabin intrusion in the leg area. With the Ford, you know you'll most likely walk away from a collision as long as it's not with an 18 wheeler.

One thing about this test is that this is not a very likely scenario. I think the small overlap test is a somewhat recent addition and you'd have to aim at a light pole at the perfect angle to recreate this crash.

I know what you mean, makes you want to question who was behind working in safety measures and how that was compared to past trucks.

Even with this info being out, i doubt it will do much if any to their sales.

Their overall safety rating is still fine so this shouldn't affect their sales at all. This is just one very unlikely scenario where your legs may get a bit crushed.

Very unlikely indeed since it takes quite a big impact for that to happen, you would likely have to crash head on to something solid and static to make that happen, like a parked semi.
