Ford F-150 Hybrid Prototype Spied

A fresh batch of spy shots showing a barely camouflaged F-150 has appeared online and the red prototype could very well be the Ford F-150 hybrid. We already know that Ford had plans to come out with one, they stated as much in 2014 by saying that they’re “working very hard” on an F-150 hybrid comment. Now, we have proof that it’s in the works and maybe even close to completion.

Spotted in Dearborn, Michigan, the F-150 was spied testing on public roads at around 35mph. According to the spy who took these photos, they heard the engine shut down during testing only to be replaced by the electrical humming noise produced by hybrid drives. This was heard when the pickup was stopped at a traffic light. Another hint towards a hybrid F-150 is the camouflaged front passenger side fender. A fabric panel is covering what seems to be a charging port so it could be a plug-in hybrid.

If it is indeed a plug-in hybrid F-150, the new pickup could be sporting the Energi badge similar to the one found on the Ford Fusion Energi and maybe even have it mated to an EcoBoost V-6 engine. EcoBoost engines are more fuel efficient and they’re supposed to produce less greenhouse gases. We could see it paired with Ford’s new 10-speed automatic transmission that has already made an appearance in the 2017 F-150 Raptor Crew Cab and Extra Cab concepts.

The new F-150 Hybrid could make an appearance in 2020 and we may see a concept model of it before then.

Sure looks like a door for the charging outlet, perfectly positioned for easy reach with the typical charger, especially if you're using one in a public parking lot. Had a feeling we would see these come to market eventually, just surprised no other truck maker has stepped up to the plate. No word from Toyota, Nissan, RAM, GM. Where ya at!?

Why come out with a hybrid when they have the ecoboost? Isn't the ecoboost fuel efficient enough?

It's another key angle to target with trucks since with a hybrid you have certain range that's all electric and that electric power can be used to get off the line with not as much effort as with a traditional powertrain setup.

With towing, this helps A LOT.

Ford won't be listing the usual specs to appeal to pickup buyers because we're not the most fuel economy conscious. Automotive News says Ford is going to draw in customers with their beer cooler. Yep, "The battery in the hybrid F-150 not only feeds the electric motor, it’s a mobile generator that can keep the beer cool at a tailgate party, charge your miter saw and run the coffee maker on a camping trip."

Sounds like Ford is trying to get rural poor white people of the Southern United States interested in their hybrid product I'm not sure if this strategy going to succeed, but I'd love to see how it's gonna change people's perception about this truck.

It will work because eventually those people will have no choice, after seeing these show up everywhere with people they respect in them, that becomes the key towards them buying. Seen it play out time and again.
